CP plans assembling Chinese Chery cars

Thailand’s largest consumer product conglomerate Charoen Pokphan Group (CP) is planning to import into Thailand market the Chinese compact car Chery QQ, the company said in a statement.

The QQ is scheduled for reservation in the second quarter of 2009. CP, which businesses are closed tied with China, said it will also negotiate a joint venture with the Chinese automobiles maker to set up the QQ assembly plant in Thailand if sale reached 5,000 units per annum.

“Our goal is to manufacture the entire car, not just a dealer,” said Thanakorn Seriburi, president of automobile businesses and finance at CP.

He said the import will be only for testing the market in the first phase plan to see mass-market possibility. Decision will be made after one year sale statistics.
