Silom was once the bustle street filled with business people and office workers of high-profile companies. The street is never falling into asleep. There have been activities 24 hours a day. In daytime, white collar workers rush between skyscrapers to do their routine jobs. The district is the financial center of the country and one of the most important financial centers of the region. Almost business units in the country and beyond rely on financial data generated from here and use them as benchmark in making business decision.

During nighttime, the street is even more bustle as the nightlife begins. Its neighboring districts Patpong and Surawong are notorious with what they have to offer: shopping for fake merchandises, drinking, dancing and even sex—a perfect place to go hang out all night long—in other word, burn your money.

It has never been a place where a broke wandered. Until come the Reds.

Being despised as poor, rural, and uneducated people, the ‘Red-Shirted’ demonstrators seized an intersection neighboring to Silom as their stronghold for a rally against the government whose they accused come to power unlawfully. The mob has been expanded and threatened to spread out through Silom district as they seek equally treatment in political right as a Thai citizen as those who wear suit working in the district.

The demonstration carries out for a month and likely to be beyond even though a threat from the government that poises to exercise forces on a crackdown and even life shot of war weapons if, they say, necessary.

The established mob braced themselves up for the threat with barricade of car tires and sharpened poles covered with plastic netting.

A mob is believed to be well prepared even against soldiers deployed to control the area, ever since the military crack down on April 10, which left 25 people dead and almost 800 injured. Despite a threat, they remain received continuing support from the rural people.

Boasted themselves as more educated and willing-hearted mob, a group of local people of Silom district gathered up in a variety color of shirt, of course, except one, and move their front line to encounter the ‘Reds’.

Bad languages have been exchanged between two sides, including stone throws and melee fight.

23.30 hours of Thursday, April 22, five grenades had been launched from an M79 grenade launcher into a mob of the Silom crowd, leaving one dead and 87 injured.

Police captured five suspects immediately.

As expected, the government accused the ‘Reds’ as wrongdoers.

No one will win the battle, but politics standoff has brought in something the country never heard of—terrorists.

Somboon Jaidee, a robust 35-year-old poor farmer in Khonkaen, donned himself up in red as he prepared for a photo shot to register as a ‘Red Shirt’ people member, a group of supporters to ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. He lost all hope to repay debts of almost half a million baht rolling up throughout a lifetime of choosing to be a farmer.

Mr. Somboon said the current Prime Minister, Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, will no way help the poor people. He enjoys an unexpected power derived unexpectedly by the help of civil people and the soldiers. Most farmers believe Mr. Abhisit will think of the people who give him the power before anything else.

Unlike ex-PM Thaksin, he always helps the poor, according to Mr. Somboon. If he were returned to power, he will help released all the debts from the poor in six months.

Mr. Somboon gets the ‘Red Shirt’ people ID card on the day. It is guaranteed that he will get the benefits if Mr. Thaksin-tied party becomes a ruling party. He joined a group of villagers afterwards to go perform demonstration in Bangkok.

The love of Mr. Thaksin has been deepened in the heart of the poor villagers. They said he thought of them as no one did before. For many poor people, Mr. Thaksin is Robin Hood — a hero who comes to help relieved them from debts, and gives them opportunities. Some villages even set up donation pools of foods and sustenance stuffs to support villagers to go for demonstration in Bangkok, which Mr. Abhisit administration reiteratedly accused them as hired mobsters.

A loan from non-financial institution is brutally charged 20% in monthly interest. If failed to repay, the interest will be rolled up as capital. It is popular among the poor who cannot afford loan from the financial institutions.

Without the ability to pay debts, most poor villagers lost their lands to these outlaw lenders.

At the government house, a coalition government declares that they are strongly united in grab of power and no force will shake them off.

Backed by the military, the people in charge of exercising the power try to bring a pure demonstration into a mobster against Thailand’s most revered institution—the monarch. Every move is accused set against the monarch, and with this, the government draws huge support from civil people and the military.

There is email forward with million of recipients in the list accusing the ‘Reds’ moving is against the monarch.

With their back against the wall, the Reds declare a caste war between the rulers and the rural poor, and they stay fight despite without a hope of win.

BMW Group Thailand’s president Michael Kordys said the German prestige carmaker will introduce its smallest model 1 Series into the Thai market at the beginning of this summer at the Bangkok International Motor Show, a ten-day auto show event running from March 26 through April 6, 2008 and held yearly at the BITEC in Bangna district east of Bangkok.

The 1 Series is a light, affordable, and agile sublime vehicle designed to fill space between BMW two icons: the Mini Cooper and the 3 Series.

The first model to be introduced into the kingdom is the 120d with engine displacement of 2.0 liters four cylinders and produces maximum power of 177 hp at 4,000 rpm and 350 Nm of torque at 1,750-3,000 rpm.

It goes from 0-100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and has a top speed of 226 km/h while consumes energy economically at 161 km/l.

BMW aims to sell the 120d with the BSI (BMW Service Inclusive) package—a warranty program of up to 5 years or 100,000 km of use and its prices will start at 3.699 million baht.

Thailand’s political turmoil is seemed reaching a deadlock as Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej faces confrontations from all the frontlines calling for his resignation as government leader or put dissolution to the House of Representatives.

Street protests led by the People Alliance for Democracy vowed that they will not end campaign unless Mr. Samak withdraws and completely banned from political activities. State-run enterprises’ unions threatened to mount a strike nationwide pressing him to sacrifice the premier position.

But Mr. Samak, who claimed he entered politics ever since many protest leaders were still young and even the opposition party leader still in his teenager, is a naturally stubborn veteran politician who is expected to fight until his very last stand, which brought him more criticisms from the media.

In his battle to remain in power, Mr. Samak has used all the methods he can think of, even begging and force, to ward off the ongoing protests.

The enemies at the gate are also imminent, utilizing the most powerful weapon of all time: propaganda to instigate the public fury and join them in the mood. Illegal activities committed by anti-government protesters and leaders are being protected by courts under the current charter.

For the last blow, the Election Committees unanimously voted that the ruling People Power Party be dissolved for committing election fraud.

Although the latest opposition attempt is to put end on crisis, as well as put grim to the People Power Party, it is definitely upon Mr. Samak to make decision on the country’s future, which he is expected to save his face and step down with grace instead of give up.

On another side of the coin, maybe it is time that Mr. Samak learns the new political approaches and ditches the old style the other former leaders used to such as issuing law and such to suppress the mob, which cannot be apply to the current situation.

It is also upon Mr. Samak, a conservative politician, to open up his mind and listen to complains from all sides, which are formerly ignored by the previous governments.

It’s the 21st century and the mass media crept into every territory. Censoring is no longer applicable.

Maybe it’s time to change.
