BJC interests in acquiring Carrefour

Thailand’s trading conglomerate Berli Jucker Plc (BJC) has expressed interest in buying Thai unit of French retailer Carrefour in its scheme to withdraw operation from the country.

Asawin Techajaroenvikul, CEO at Berli Jucker, said BJC is in the process of studying possibility to bid for Carrefour’s operation in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, which has 40, 20 and 2 stores respectively.

“We are invited to place bidding,” Mr. Aswin said, “but the whole thing is uncertain right now.”

He said the possibility of winning is 50-50 due to acquiring the French retailer’s units means that the company is entering into a new whole business.

Carrefour announced earlier this month it was considering divesting its operation in Southeast Asia to concentrate on bigger market of India and China.
